Poor Parents Are Held To A Different Standard When It Comes To CPS

The child welfare system is a necessary and under-appreciated part of health and human services. Their job is to keep our children safe, and there's no more important work than that.

Child Services responds to criticism after recent deaths

A spokesman for the Administration for Child Services responded Wednesday to criticism of the agency, after the deaths of multiple children at homes that were at one time probed by the agency.
He said it's important to understand that it takes multiple government factions -- and ultimately a judge -- to determine custody of a child in New York City, amid an average of 55,000 reports of child abuse per year. The most recent death was that of 1-year-old Bianca Abdul, who, according to police, was found unconscious inside a home in Midland Beach by her mother. Family told police there hadn't been heat in the home since November, and at one point a 12-year-old girl had been temporarily removed from the home, according to a NYPD spokeswoman.

Child protective services to be fully funded in 2017 county budget

After a lengthy session Tuesday night, the Monroe County Legislature approved the proposed Monroe County budget for 2017.The measure was passed in a 19-10 vote.The budget contained one amendment which allocated an additional $52,000 for child care.
Many are keeping a close eye on funding for Child Protective Services (CPS) after the death of three-year-old Greece toddler Brook Stagles. Her family, including grandfather John Geer, is adamant that CPS failed the little girl by refusing to return phone calls or go into the house.

After recently withdrawing her son from public school because of safety and education concerns, a New York City mom went through all the required procedures to homeschool her son, but soon found Child Protective Services (CPS) coming after her.

Reduced caseloads for Child Protective Services workers is lifesaving progress
Some families in Erie County paid a terrible price for understaffing in Child Protective Services, but a new report shows that conditions have improved significantly.
Excessive caseloads helped to create conditions that contributed to the deaths of children, including Eain Brooks, Abdifatah Mohamud and Jacob T. Noe. In each case, overworked CPS workers were already familiar with the families.

Weiner pics show Democrat sexted with his kid - now child protective services are involved

Things just got worse for former Congressman Anthony Weiner. After allegedly sending a sexually provocative picture of himself in his underwear while his child lay beside him on a bed, child protective services stepped in, the New York Post reported.
The Administration for Children's Services launched an investigation into Weiner and his conduct with his 4-year-old son Jordan, according to a government source. A worker at the New York City apartment building where Weiner lived with now-estranged wife Huma Abedin confirmed that ACS paid a visit on Tuesday. This is within the agency's 48 hour window to pay a home visit after a child is reported at risk.

Police: Children found unsupervised during search for fugitive

Police arrested a local man and woman Tuesday after finding that both were smoking marijuana for more than an hour in an apartment while they were supposed to be watching children in their care who were playing in a nearby parking lot.
Cherrie Fleck, 37, and Tristin Thibault, 19, were both charged with possession of a controlled drug and child endangerment, according to Sgt. Daniel Ball.

County Executive Opens New County Family Court in Yonkers

Police grill schizophrenic baby-sitter, career criminal boyfriend in death of Staten Island toddler
Police are questioning a baby-sitter - who is a diagnosed schizophrenic with a pill problem - and her career criminal boyfriend in connection with the death of a Staten Island toddler, sources said Monday.
Little Anthony Delgado, just 16 months old, had been hit numerous times in the head, had rectal bleeding and suffered what resembles a bite or burn on his penis, sources said. The baby-sitter and her boyfriend are insisting to police that the child fell, sources said.

Former CPS investigator sentenced to two years of probation

A former Child Protective Services investigator will now spend the next two years on probation after pleading guilty to forging records in a child death investigation, according to Sullivan County Assistant District Attorney Julie Canter.
During Cathy Agnew's sentencing hearing in Sullivan County today she received some support from a former Tennessee Department of Children's Services colleague. According to court records, one of DCS' assistant general counsels wrote a letter of support praising Agnew's past service; a document her attorney referenced today in court.

Child Protective Services to Work in Schools Under New Partnership

Students aren't the only ones heading back to school in Erie County this year. A new initiative from the Department of Social Services will have Child Protective Services employees working directly in school districts one or two days a week.
"They're going to continue to work on their caseload, however what they're there for is to provide a connection right to the department. It's a collaborative effort where they're there to work with teachers, the administration on any concerns they may have with families," said Al Dirschberger, commissioner of the Department of Social Services.

Lawsuit: New York foster care officials didn't protect kids

Advocates for foster children in New York City sued the system Wednesday, accusing state and city agencies of putting children at risk by letting them languish for years without being placed in permanent homes.
The lawsuit filed in federal court in Manhattan claims the more than 11,000 children in the city's system average far more time there than most places in the country. It says the needless bureaucratic delays subject them to emotional distress and increase the odds of physical or sexual abuse.

Beaten infant in critical condition; father charged

PALENVILLE -- A 4-month-old boy was fighting for his life at Albany Medical Center after being beaten by his father, a state police lieutenant said Thursday.
The boy's father, Kirk Berry, 27, of 512 state Route 32A in Palenville, was caring for the child at their home on June 5 when he "became angry" and caused the life-threatening injuries, Drake said. Berry was arrested Tuesday and charged with felony assault.

Walmart has emerged victorious in a court battle against one of the country's oldest churches over the retailer's sale of assault weapons.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals reversed a previous ruling that would have required Walmart to let its shareholders vote on a proposal for tighter oversight of firearm sales at this June's annual meeting. City Sues to Keep Ex ACS Worker Who Failed Check Abused Kids Off Payroll

City officials are fighting to stop a child caseworker who they say "cannot be trusted with the welfare of at-risk children" from getting his job back - after a labor arbitrator decided to give him a second chance, according to a recent lawsuit.

The sheriff of Fulton County, New York, Thomas Lorey, made a presentation to some Second Amendment supporters on Friday, January 16.
Lorey's spiel was a call to abide by the Second Amendment of the Constitution by refusing to ask for a permit for the right to own a gun for self-defense. When Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the medical marijuana bill into law this past July, I assumed my daughter would finally get the help she needs from our state. My 8-year-old Donella, whom we call Donnie, is confined to her hospital bed.
Adding to our woes is an open investigation by Child Protective Services because I obtained and administered medical marijuana in an effort to treat my daughter. It breaks my heart that, as I struggle to get the best treatment for my daughter, the state of New York is spending public resources to pull my family apart. When I was able to give her medical marijuana obtained illegally, I saw the pain lessen.

Judge Says Constitution Doesn't Exempt Religious from Vaccination Requirements

A federal district judge in Brooklyn rules that a New York City policy of keeping non-vaccinated children out of school during exposure risk does not violate constitutional rights.
Immunization rates among school-aged children have dropped significantly in the last two decades. The decline is directly attributable to the misguided fears about the safety of vaccinations, a belief started by thoroughly debunked research which linked vaccines to the rise in autism. Schools have always required children to be up to date on their vaccinations when enrolling. Exemptions are allowed for those with documented medical reasons, as well as religious beliefs. While these exemptions are still rare, the increase in religious (and in some states personal belief) exemptions have led to a precipitous decline in vaccinated children. It has also led to a public health crisis of major outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases.
