Under state law, a person who fails to report suspected child abuse can be charged with a crime, a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. But can that person also be sued for it?...

A Shelbyville doctor accused of not reporting suspected abuse of a child, who was later found dead, argues that, based on legal precedent in Indiana, he is immune to a civil lawsuit. A Marion County judge must soon decide whether that is the case.

For the second time this year, itinerant abortionist Ulrich Klopfer had a misdemeanor dismissed because he had completed a "pretrial diversion program," the South Bend Tribune reported.

Both charges were because Ulrich did not follow Indiana state law which requires that notice of abortions to girls under age 14 be filed promptly with the Indiana Department of Health and Child Protective Services -within three days. Indiana law specifies that sexual activity of a 13-year-old or younger, regardless of the perpetrator's age, is child molestation.

The state has been ordered to pay more than $31 million to an Indiana family "destroyed" by wrongful accusations that the parents caused their 14-year-old daughter's death.

On Tuesday, a federal court jury determined that three Indiana Department of Child Services employees, an Indiana State Police detective and a doctor had violated the constitutional rights of Roman and Lynnette Finnegan and their children. The officials were accused of falsifying records, sabotaging investigations into what happened and retaliating against the couple for complaining about how they were treated.

Who would you choose: your mentally ill wife or your 3-year-old daughter? That was the dilemma a Fort Wayne man faced when the Indiana Department of Child Services sought to terminate his parental rights.

He rejected leaving his wife, and his rights were severed by Allen Superior Court Judge Charles Pratt in April 2014. The child turns 5 in August and remains in foster care while the case is appealed. Indiana Supreme Court justices heard arguments in the emotional case Thursday, even referring to the end result as "draconian" and "enormous."

A baby is born addicted to opiates, a young child wakes up to find their parent unresponsive with a needle in their arm, siblings sit in the back seat of a car parked on a country road as their parents are shooting up heroin.

LaPorte County and Indiana are experiencing an epidemic. It is drug abuse. In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, epidemic is listed as affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community or region at the same time. Certainly we can describe the current rapid spread of opiate use an epidemic.

Farmer Hugh Bowman hardly looks the part of a revolutionary who stands in the way of promising new biotech discoveries and threatens Monsanto's pursuit of new products it says will "feed the world."

"Hell's fire," said the 75-year-old self-described "eccentric old bachelor," who farms 300 acres of land passed down from his father. Bowman rested in a recliner, boots off, the tag that once held his Foster Grant reading glasses to a drugstore rack still attached, a Monsanto gimme cap perched ironically on his balding head.

Now, to the unraveling of a long, winding and weird custody battle. It's the story of a 24-year-old thought to be missing for decades. Now found, a grown, married man.

How did police track him down after all these years? And what happened here? Abc's john muller is on the story. Reporter: Dan, this case was so cold, indiana state police had to reopen it when the stepfather turned over his son's social security card a few months ago. It was that simple piece of information, a social security number, that led investigators to a 24-year-old whose name changed but whose license picture looked a lot like the 5-year-old boy who went missing. This is a lot for me to take in.

On March 15, 2012, my 15-yearold cousin came to live with me as foster child after having been removed from more than eight foster homes because of her extreme behavior.

I decided to take her in to try to make a difference in her life not knowing what would happen when she moved into my house along with my three kids. In the beginning, she said she welcomed the opportunity to live with us. Soon after she got there, things changed. She started getting kicked out of school, being disrespectful, did not want to do chores or take medication prescribed to her for stress and a bipolar disorder. Her attitude changed. She started not coming home from school and I reported it to her caseworker but got no response.
