A thick roll of snowy-white batting rests on her bedroom floor, stacks of colorful lap quilts are folded on the bed and her old Singer sewing machine, where she spends most of her days, is on a table near the window.

For years, Bryant has been collecting scraps of cloth, stitching them together and creating beautiful lap quilts. She always gave them away. Bryant said if a man came to mow the lawn, she would ask him if he had a wife and children. If he said yes, she would send him home with a few quilts. About a year ago, Bryant decided she wanted to find a way to touch the lives of Cleveland County's neediest children.

TRENTON - While under the care of the state's child protection agency, a Monmouth county baby was burned, beaten, and sexually abused, then ignored as doctor after doctor recommended therapy for anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Three different caseworkers at the state's Division of Youth and Family Services could have stopped the abuse several times, attorney David Mazie contends, but none did. Now the girl is 13, and her adopted mother is suing the state Division of Youth and Family Services and three caseworkers for damages in a trial that kicked off Monday with impassioned opening arguments in Trenton.

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -- A woman who confessed to child abuse 11 years ago in exchange for the withdrawal of a murder charge laid based on the faulty evidence of disgraced pathologist Charles Smith says authorities bullied her into falsely confessing.

In a sworn affidavit filed in Superior Court, Brenda Waudby says she was bullied into the false confession, and is seeking an appeal extension to have her conviction thrown out. Waudby was first charged with murder in the 1997 death of her 21-month-old daughter, Jenna Mellor, based on Smith's erroneous findings.
