Now some children's rights advocates are criticizing Child Protective Services for not intervening before it was too late. Two-year-old Amber MacCurdy died back in April. It's been two years since Larry Overton heard a Texas jury convict his wife, Hannah, of capital murder in the bizarre salt poisoning death of 4-year-old Andrew Burd, a child the couple was trying to adopt.

Last October, three justices in Texas' 13th Court of Appeals denied Hannah Overton's latest appeal. Hannah Overton, 32, is currently serving a life sentence in a Texas prison. To investigators, Andrew's sudden and bizarre death was no accident. Within days, the authorities had begun weaving a sinister tale of murder, theorizing that Hannah Overton had become overwhelmed with the arrival of a foster child.

California could lose hundreds of millions of federal stimulus dollars, if the state fails to make changes in education. Now Governor Schwarzenegger is calling for a special legislative session to make sure the state gets that much-needed cash.

October is the deadline for states to apply for stimulus money for education -- $4.3 billion are up for grabs. But to receive those federal grants, California like other states, must submit an education package proposing changes in the way we educate kids. See video report.
