A Canadian judge has ruled a single father in Ottawa is too obese to be a good parent and ordered his two children put up for adoption.

The 39-year-old man, who can't be identified to protect the identities of his sons, lost his custody battle launched by the Children's Aid Society, the Ottawa Citizen reported. The man weighs 380 pounds and argued unsuccessfully that on his own, he slimmed from 525 pounds since last year with diet and exercise in order to keep his sons, 6 and 7.

A Maryland man said he made his 12-year-old son carry a sign proclaiming him to be "homeless" because he failed to call home as instructed.

Kevin Burks of Waldorf said he made his son, Kenny, carry a sign up and down his street Monday reading, "Homeless, Won't Listen to Parents," because he failed to call home as instructed when spending the night at a friend's house, WRC-TV, Washington, reported Wednesday. "All he has to do is check in at 8:30," Burks said. He said Kenny did not call until 9 p.m.

The Kresge Foundation is investing $700,00 in the Western Michigan University John Seita Scholars Program, which supports services to former foster youth who attend the university by paying for tuition and other programs.

The investment will be used for a three-year, $1 million program that will connect and share best practices at higher education institutions across the state to improve college enrollment and graduation rates of foster youths. Kresge is also willing to match $200,000 to raise additional funds for the project.

Fayette County had a higher rate of children living in foster care from 2012 to 2014 than the state rate, according to child well-being rankings released recently by Kentucky Youth Advocates.

Chief Fayette Family Court Judge Lucinda Masterton said she thinks that the numbers could be the result of the community's heroin problem and a lack of manpower with state social workers. "It's a combination of really sad factors," Masterton said. "We're facing a heroin epidemic," she said.

This holiday season was the greatest celebration ever when Jewel Stroman, 23, finally got her daughter back from DC Child and Family Services Administration (CFSA).

In 2005, Stroman approached the AFRO about the struggles she faced trying to get her son out of foster care. Her father, Bruce Smith, suffering from kidney failure, placed his daughter and three-month old grandson in the Montgomery County Child and Family Services.

Nothing really changed after a New Jersey state social worker banged on Christopher and Nicole Zimmer's front door, and yet everything was different.

Over the next two hours, the social worker quizzed their 15-year-old son, Chris, including questions on whether his parents fought or did drugs. She wanted to see his homeschool curriculum. She wanted to inspect their firearms. She told the Zimmers to sign papers agreeing to turn over their son's medical records.

Jacob "Jake" Hedger was 9 months old when he was killed last March. Edmond, Oklahoma police and the Oklahoma State medical examiner have ruled Jacob's death a homicide - he suffered such a blow to the head that his skull cracked.

His death has remained unsolved and the investigation turned to a huge mess by one contended issue: When did Jake suffer his head injury? That factor is very important considering that he was dropped off at his babysitter's home sometime before 8:00 a.m. on March 8, 2011.

But I'm getting a wee bit tired of the topic of "bullying" being bantered about like it is akin to a lynching . I get it: Bullying is mean. It's mean spirited.

Yes, its hurtful and causes many people (most often kids) emotional pain and heartache. I get it. But the pendulum has swung far, far to the left on this topic of late. Teachers go through hours of "anti-bullying" training. Kids a subjected to countless lectures about the ills of bullying. Schools are implementing one of my favorite methods of diffusing this behavior: the Zero Tolerance Policy.

Baby P's happy smile masked months of pain and terror inflicted by his mother and stepfather. He was used as a punchbag by the sadistic thug who trained him 'like a dog' - the child instinctively put his head to the floor when the brute approached.

The baby's cot and bedroom walls were stained with his blood. He weighed as little as a child five months younger and had been inflicting pain on himself by headbutting walls and floors. His fingernails were pinched - and possibly ripped by pliers - until they fell off.
