PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Melissa Grigione, a local expert in wildlife and large felines, said mountain lions in Pleasantville could be more common than most would think, especially with the warmer winter weather as of late.

"Mountain lions used to be native to this area and they're starting to try and come back here and become familiar with the area. It's sort of an eastward bound movement that they're going through now," said Grigione, an associate professor and director of the Graduate Program in Environmental Science at Pace University. "Now that it's been warmer here too there's more forage, which means more deer around, which is tempting to them."

Wildlife experts say the recent cougar sightings across Nebraska could become more common.

What to do in case of an encounter: Due to their secretive nature and low density, mountain lions rarely interact with humans. Occasional interactions may occur with human infringement on natural areas and mountain lion immigration into populated areas with high deer densities.

ST. PETERSBURG -- Mental health professionals will tell you there are children across the Tampa Bay area who have been through hell. Many have been ripped out of the care of their parents due to abuse, neglect, or even death.

Some are forced to live in a stranger's home and, in some instances, children in state care will live in dozens of foster care homes while waiting to be adopted. The experience can be traumatic, but for those young people who age out of the system, they're getting a rude awakening. Florida lawmakers want to cut back on how long it will pay to help them get their lives on track.

Once Bill Gates, D. C. Supt. Michelle Rhee and the Waiting for Superman crowd are done drawing and quartering teachers, are they going to come after us parents?

After all, we're just the flip side of the same coin. What if, after all the millions of dollars that have been poured into marketing and movies promoting charter schools, turnaround companies, vouchers, mayors running the schools, etc., parents still refuse to play?

Sweden's parliament members are being warned to drop plans to change their homeschooling laws or soon they could be on par with Germany, where persecution over homeschooling recently convinced a family to leave and come to the U.S. for asylum.

Apparently, Sweden's homeschooling plan is recommended in Chapter 24, Paragraph 23 of a proposed school law, officials said. It "appears likely that the same circumstances that currently exist in Germany would appear in Sweden, forcing Swedish citizens who wish to homeschool to flee their home country. It is our understanding that some Swedish families have already chosen to flee because of the harassment from local school authorities," the letter says.
