Bad enough that the women of the Yearning for Zion "ranch" in Eldorado, Texas, had been turned into zombie baby incubators, or at least that's how they come across on TV.

Now they're being victimized yet again as the legal system works to permanently separate them from their youngest children, including nursing newborns.

The Justice Department and police officials across the nation are directing their agencies to deal with thousands of children who are left behind following the arrests of parents, from surprise raids at family homes to roadside traffic stops.

Few law enforcement agencies have policies that specifically address the continuing care of children after such arrests, despite an estimated 1.7 million children who have at least one parent in prison, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The number of children jumps to about 2.7 million when parents detained in local jails are included.

How safe are the people in whose care parents leave their children, and have those people had proper criminal background checks?

The recent case involving a Pocono Summit karate instructor charged with raping a 12-year-old female student raises those questions. Public and private schools, day care centers, children's camps, foster care and other programs working with children are required by law to have prospective employees and volunteers undergo criminal background and child abuse clearance checks with the state Department of Public Welfare or state Department of Public Education, state police and FBI.

This Reuters story (quoting the WHO) points that hospital patients have a 10% chance of receiving a medical error and a 1 in 300 chance of dying from it. Contrast that with the 1 in 10 million chance of dying in an air crash.

As potential patients of this dangerous system, we need to be aware of its risk and defend ourselves against it. I have huge respect for the human immune system and its ability to conquer most infections and challenges without medical assistance. Maximizing proper nutrition and minimizing junk processed food and chemical toxins is essential to stay out of the clutches of the dysfunctional medical apparatus.

Frankly, I seldom shop WFM. The main reason is because there's a locally owned and operated business in my community that sells only natural and organic food and other supplies.

NGVC was built on the premise that consumers should have access to affordable, high-quality foods and dietary supplements, with nutritional guidance to help them support their own health. The family-run store has grown into a successful national chain with locations across Colorado, Texas, Utah, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Missouri, New Mexico, Montana, Kansas, Idaho, Nebraska, Arizona and Oregon. Altogether, the company has 1,800 employees.

Yesterday Whole Foods called the nation's raw milk providers to inform us that as of today, Saturday March 13 at 8 am, they will be removing all raw milk from their shelves. Their actions make it seem like a health emergency, and it is not.

This is not a safety issue. Our wholesome and delicious raw milk is still available at local stores throughout CA. As a very large corporation, Whole Foods must respond to the decisions of their board of directors.

Whooping cough. Those are among the last words Jennifer Crocker expected to be on her mind during a recent visit to the doctor. But she hasn't been able to shake all the sound bites she's heard lately on the local news.

"I didn't even think about any of this before," Crocker said, immediately before receiving the pertussis booster in early August. "Not until talking with my sister, who is about to have a baby." The confusion is much the same almost anywhere you go in the United States, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. When whooping cough is present in a community, people learn the basics of how to protect themselves and others. When it fades, they forget.

Children fully inoculated against whooping cough become more susceptible to the disease as the vaccination wanes over time, contributing to outbreaks in the U.S., a study found.

Each year after receiving the fifth dose of the vaccine, children had a 42 percent increased risk of acquiring whooping cough, also known as pertussis, according to research in the New England Journal of Medicine. The vaccine, known as DTaP, which also inoculates against diphtheria and tetanus, is sold in the U.S. by GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) and Sanofi.

A group of California students who dared to wear the American flag on Cinco de Mayo learned a hard lesson about the corruption of citizenship and sovereignty this week.

They were sent home for their show of U.S. patriotism. Because while flying the colors of reconquista is perfectly acceptable, flying Old Glory is practically a hate crime. Some Mexican-American students KTVU spoke with said they thought wearing red, white and blue on Cinco de Mayo was disrespectful.

Why are some families doing home schooling, how many are doing it, and is it a good idea? Several readers responded to a recent column on district and charter enrollment by asking these questions.

First, why? Professor Milton Gaither of Messiah College in Pennsylvania responded, "The most recent (2007) National Center for Education Statistics data has the top three reasons for homeschooling being first, a concern about school environment (bullying, lack of morals, etc), second, a parental desire to provide religious or moral instruction, and third, dissatisfaction with the academic instruction at the public school."
