While vague categories like "deprivation of necessities" may save a child from abandonment by a crack mother, they also allow child-welfare agencies to fall heavily on low-income households.

Consider it a coming out, of sorts. It's true. I'm one of *them*. I'm a refuser. For those of you who don't know this already, I feel it's time to just put it right out there and take ownership. My husband and I are the "crazies"...

For fun, ask your doctor to share with you all they know about the ingredients (active and inactive) in the vaccines. Then ask them to show you the package insert for each of the vaccinations your child is about to receive. I have. I can almost guarantee they will tell you, "Don't worry about it. I am the doctor. It's for the best. Do you have a medical degree?" They really won't know or say much more, except to possibly give you a condescending lecture and the crackerjack eye for daring to question their authority. Uhh...as you might imagine, I'd highly recommend you DO question their authority.

A Yelm woman allegedly addicted to meth gave birth to baby at home to avoid alerting Child Protection Services to the baby's birth.

The Thurston County Sheriff's Office received a tip from CPS Aug. 13 at 6:47 a.m. that a 31-year-old woman may have given birth at her home "without required medical care in an attempt to keep CPS from taking her baby into protective custody," according to a press release from the sheriff's department.

Officials of the Montana Fish and Wildlife Agency have closed over 180-miles of the Yellowstone River and hundreds of miles of other waterways. The move came following a massive fish die-off that saw thousands of fish killed.

Fishing guides and rafting operators who run businesses along the river said the move could be catastrophic to the area's sizable outdoor industry, which depends heavily on the busy summer season. One official said the closure could last for months if river conditions don't improve and fish keep dying. The closure extends to hundreds of miles of waterways that feed into the Yellowstone, including the Boulder, Shields and Stillwater rivers.

In a brightly-lit boardroom on the second floor of the offices of the Yellowknife Health and Social Services Authority, 25-year-old Dawn Blanchard is giving an update on the furniture she still needs to find for her new apartment.

Five months ago, Blanchard was homeless with a serious cocaine habit - part of a downward spiral that she says began soon after her son was taken away. Now she's working part-time and preparing a home for two children under the age of eight.

A Yuba City woman was arrested early Monday for selling heroin from her home, and her 15-year-old son, who's associated with a white supremacist gang, was turned over to Child Protective Services, a drug enforcement official said.

Tamara Elaine Null, 49, was arrested shortly after 7 a.m. at her home in the 1500 block of Anneka Lane after an investigation that began several weeks ago, said Mike Hudson, commander of the Yuba-Sutter Narcotic Enforcement Team, or NET-5.

Two 8-year-old twins who Yakima police say were so malnourished that they weighed less than 44 pounds each are recovering, while their mother remains jailed on multiple abuse charges.

Police said the girls told them they'd been abused, starved and locked in a bedroom at their home in the 300 block of North Ninth Street before relatives took them and called authorities Feb. 6. "In my 13 years of law enforcement experience, I have not observed children so severely malnourished," Yakima Detective Michael Durbin wrote in an affidavit.

Wyoming's governor signed a bill this week which will "stop overregulation of locally produced foods" by making it illegal for the state government to require "licensure, permitting, certification, inspection, packaging, or labeling".

In practice, this means that farmers markets and small food stands will be able to proceed without the interference of government busybodies. As the bill explains, its purpose "is to allow for the sale and consumption of homemade foods, and to encourage the expansion of agricultural sales by farmers markets, ranches, farms and home based producers."

I'm a fair weather purchaser of organic produce. If it's on the shelf at my local New World or fruit and vegetable store I always choose organic over nonorganic but I won't trek across town.

But my haphazard attitude towards buying organic produce evaporated in light of the 2012 Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce released by US-based Environmental Working Group (EWG). This guide features a so called Dirty Dozen - a list of fruit and vegetables "most commonly contaminated with pesticides". The findings are based on an analysis of over 60,000 samples, and "nearly all the studies ... tested produce after it had been washed or peeled."
