Family Spots Miracle Baby's Rare Eye Cancer In Photos

An infant in UK has been diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer that was first suspected after the baby's family noticed an oddity in its pictures. The baby was diagnosed with retinoblastoma.

A 7-month-old baby in the U.K. has been diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer that was first spotted in family photographs. Parents of Newcastle baby girl Frankie-Leigh Hendry were told earlier this month that their infant has retinoblastoma, a rare cancer, which is also the most common type of eye cancer in children. The condition is often detected in infancy when a parent notices something abnormal about a child's eye in a photograph taken with flash. In Frankie's case, a family member pointed out the oddity to the baby's mother, Megan Athey, in the pictures she took. A web search later hinted it could be a cancer, later diagnosed as retinoblastoma. A few hundred children in the United States are diagnosed with this form of cancer every year.

UPDATE: Ex-social worker found guilty of filing false abuse claims

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) - A former Kentucky state social worker has been convicted of filing false child abuse complaints against two people in Grayson County.

The false complaints began in 2014 and were levied against a close friend's husband and a pastor at her church. The friend, Shawna Beauchamp, says allegations included violence, drug abuse and sexual abuse. She said Bond offered to check confidential records to find the complainant's identity.

Doctor, nurses charged in California with child sexual abuse

California authorities say a brain surgeon and two nurses have been charged in a child sex abuse ring involving seven victims under 13.

Watsonville police Capt. Jorge Zamora said Thursday that Dr. James Kohut, Emily Stephens and Rashel Brandon have been arrested and charged with sex crimes with children. Zamora said the children have been placed in protective custody. It was unclear if the suspects are represented by lawyers.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A review by Rhode Island's child advocate has found that four children died in the past year despite warnings from family, friends, police and others.

The findings in a report released Thursday by the Child Fatality Review Panel call for an overhaul of the way the Department of Children, Youth and Families Child Protective Services assesses risk and investigates calls placed to its hotline.

Democratic lawmaker says Texas CPS workloads make 'a travesty' of child protection

A Democratic-sponsored bill that would set goals for reducing Texas child welfare workers' caseloads is laudable but needs more careful consideration, two key Republican writers of House social services policy said Monday.

Houston Democratic Rep. Armando Walle's measure would double-down on state GOP leaders' recent approval of 829 new positions at beleaguered Child Protective Services. The bill would encourage CPS to hire 893 more employees over the next two years and create an additional 825 slots at sister agencies such as Adult Protective Services, Child Care Licensing and the unit that operates the protective services department's hotline for reporting abuse, the Legislative Budget Board has estimated.

Child Protective Services after NYC homeschooler

After recently withdrawing her son from public school because of safety and education concerns, a New York City mom went through all the required procedures to homeschool her son, but soon found Child Protective Services (CPS) coming after her.

Sonoma County Voters Pass 18 Of 23 Measures, Including Ban On GMO's

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) - Voters in Sonoma County passed 18 of 23 measures in Tuesday's election. Four measures failed and one measure is still too close to call.

Measure M, a ban on genetically engineered organisms in the unincorporated area of the county, passed with 56 percent. It needed majority approval.

Missing Alabama children found safe in Lafayette, grandmother in custody

Two children who were reported missing in Alabama are now safe after being found in Lafayette.

Thirteen-year-old Jayden Scearcy and 4-year-old Jesse Reed were found in the 1000 block of 11th Street Saturday afternoon. The children were reported missing from their home in Anniston, Alabama, Tuesday. The children's grandmother, 56-year-old Donna Scearcy, was arrested by Lafayette police on a warrant for kidnapping.
