Time for changeTo the Editor: An Open Letter to the Mendocino County Supervisors: Mendocino County Health and Human Services (HHS) ranks at or near the bottom of the 58 California counties on many measures.

FCS fails to conduct timely investigations and is not in compliance with State-required educational standards for Social Workers handling child abuse/neglect cases. Under-qualified staff, staff shortages and poor management decisions are problems that need correcting.

Meningococcal disease can cause symptoms including fever, headache and a stiff neck. Some people may experience nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light and altered mental status or confusion. Anyone with symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. Those without health insurance can call 311 to find a CDPH clinic or partner site.

A life-story record must be prepared in a bid to help ensure a four-year-old boy remembers his dying mother, a High Court judge has recommended.

With no other family members available to look after her child, the woman is disputing a Northern Ireland trust's opinion that adoption is in his best interests. She has voiced fears that her son's name would be changed and he may forget about her.

I was raised in a family of girls, so the world of boys is an ongoing mystery to me. I always thought I would have all girls since my mom also cam from a family of girls.

I have found there is something so special about boys, however, and the strings of my heart somehow attach to my boys in a different way than they do to my girls. Although boys can seem so stoic, unconcerned, and unaffected by things, their hearts are just as vulnerable as their girl counterparts who make their feelings, worries, and struggles known much more easily for the most part. Girls show you their hand while boys make great poker players by hiding their cards a bit more, which means they are also hiding what's on their hearts, too.

The new director of the Michigan Department Health and Human Services has his work cut out for him as he oversees the state's largest and newest department, with 14,000 employees and a $24 billion budget.

To name just two projects, Lyon is in the early phase of completing the merger of two departments that account for 45 percent of the state's annual budget - the Department of Community Health and the Department of Human Services - and he heads the state's largest rebid of Medicaid contracts that will direct $8 billion to 13 competing private health maintenance organizations for care coordination of 1.7 million low-income recipients.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently settled a suit filed by parents of two children who Sheriff's deputies kidnapped with no warrant. The settlement reached a mutually-agreed upon $800,000 to be paid to the parents in question, who said their civil rights had been violated. The lawsuit claimed that the children were wrongfully removed from their San Gabriel Valley home, some four years ago. The police had no warrant to take the children, but they were nevertheless kept by the state for four months.

It must have been shame that drove doctors at a California hospital to hide the body of an infant who had suddenly died after receiving eight simultaneous vaccinations. The parents were never allowed to see the body of their son before he was cremated.

Even after a year and four months had gone by, the official autopsy had not been revealed. Their son, Matthew, had been given DTaP, IPV, Hib, PCV, Hep B and Hep A in three shots, one in the right arm and two in the left leg, just a day before his sudden death.

By now many of you have heard about the Naugler family. Headlines have focused on a homeschooling or homesteading family of 10 children who were taken away from their parents in Kentucky on May 7th.

I have never met the Naugler family in person and have never been to their residence. My connection with the family is through online discussions with Nicole in a private Facebook group the past year. There is much I cannot know about them only knowing them through this forum, although the types of discussions had in the group tend to be fairly in depth and people can get to know one another better than many of the people they see every day. I don't pretend to know them well or claim a close friendship, but I do have some understanding of their views and lifestyle and a great deal of sympathy toward their plight. More importantly, I see how the criticisms against them can be applied to many, many other people who have or will be wrongfully treated and will need help.
