Parental Treatment Choice

My name is Martha and I have a five-year old child with early onset bipolar disorder among other problems. I also have a three-year old baby girl with no problems.

Recently, my sister, turned me into CPS because she does not agree with my treatment plan for my bipolar daughter. At this point, CPS "says" they will just verify the medical verification I have given and get back to me in two weeks. However, I would like to be prepared.

I know they will question me about her medications and the doses we give. However, my husband and I have decided to pursue natural alternatives such as: Omega 3, B vitamins, counseling, and other things. We feel that our daughter is too young to be over-medicated and feel the side affects related to these drugs are just too much of a risk. If at any time, I thought her problems were out of my control and warranted medications, I would not hesitate to use them. However, I have taken steps to make her safe and happy with natural methods.

Isn't this my decision as her parent? She is not suffering any harmful side affects from our decision and on most days is happy and safe at our home. Are there any others with special-needs children who have faced this? Are there any laws or legal statues concerning this issue?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

~Martha

Thanks for your question. I am so sorry you are being put under a microscope because you are trying to care for your daughter in the least intrusive manner possible. I commend you for that.

Readers should know that Martha hails from the great state of Texas.

Why am I not surprised about the fact that you are in Texas. That state is the biggest one that says first medicate no matter what the condition or the lack there of one. I find it absolutely sicking to medicate a 2 or 3 old year with very power drugs. So that they can be easy to take care of. I know you are doing the right now cause later you wont have to regret it.

In my opinion, I would move away from your sister and stop discussing any medical information with her, or anyone whom you know. It is just as easy to strike up a conversation with a stranger for unbiased input. You will be suprised at the volume of information that you can get from a stranger. You need to protect your children. Go to a licensed medical doctor (who believes in alternative methods) and tell the social worker that your daughter does have a licensed doctor taking care of her, and that her medical condition is a private matter. The more you talk, the worse it gets. There is an old saying: Loose lips sink ships. Good luck.
P.S. My own son, at 2 yrs old went to the AMA doctors at Kaiser. He had asthma (probably from the vaccines). He went through some bad tests and the medicines were becoming less and less effective. Thank God that I had studied Homeopathic medicine and had a directory of those doctors, because it was one of them who effectively cured my son. And he only charged us $20.00! I thank the alternative doctor for my son's health and I thank the regular doctors for pulling him out of his many emergency situations. I know that alternative meds work. I also am starting to withdraw my comments on this subject from others who are not of the same mindset, to avoid problems later on, such as what you have.

You are courageous to not cave in to these crazy ideas about drugging kids. The recent case on TV shows us that, if you child is killed by medication they will go after you not the doctor. If you are pressured, you may want to get the prescriptions and flush them down the toilet just to keep the CPS off your back. My son is on psychiatric meds and after 20 years, has liver damage and other health problems from them. These meds are very dangerous. Who knows what harm they do to childrens brains?

We have an 11 year old daughter that was removed from our home almost two years ago because no one understood the problems she was having and no one would help us. Everyone just judged us and suddenly we were labeled as bad parents. We love our little girl very much and have fought so hard for her return. We are told by everyone that we have accomplished alot as far as cooperating with everyone. Just because we had to struggle with the everyday ups and downs that was no reason for them to just come in and remove her. That is all they are good for, one little call to them and they march right in. We are different and better people now, but still they act like that doesn't matter.
